Mary Cosgrove, class of 1994, was an outstanding tennis player during her years as a Belle. She boasted an impressive record of 82 wins and 24 losses while playing both singles and doubles during her four year career. Mary was named the most improved tennis player for both her first and second years. In her junior year she amassed a record of 26-3, which earned her a Midwest ranking of 11th and a 42nd ranking in the entire nation. Mary went undefeated in that season in both singles and doubles during the team’s annual spring break trip to Hilton Head, during which she defeated the region’s eighth ranked player. She was named “Most Valuable Player” for the team and she was also a finalist for the Saint Mary’s College “Athlete of the Year” award. She was elected as a team captain by her teammates at the start of her senior year. She earned a regional ranking of 13th and a 39th national ranking in the country for all tennis players. Mary and her doubles partner also achieved a regional doubles ranking of 12th. Mary was honored again as the team’s “Most Valuable Player” while also receiving the “Athletic Director’s Award” for her outstanding leadership.

Mary graduated in 1994 with a degree in English Literature. She was also a volunteer Sunday school teacher, a tutor to inner-city students, a member of the Student Athletic Council, and a member of the Blue Mantle Yearbook staff. She went on to graduate from Chicago’s John Marshall Law School and spent time in Chicago clerking and working for the Defense Research Institute. She is now an Assistant District Attorney for Erie County in Buffalo, NY. Mary continues to play competitive tennis in USTA leagues and her teams have advanced to sectional and national rounds. She has also coached youth tennis in both Chicago and Buffalo. Mary is an active volunteer in Buffalo working with the Roman Catholic Diocese of Buffalo, the United Way, and Neighborhood Legal Services. She also serves as a board member for various health and human services organizations. She serves as the President of the Saint Mary’s Alumnae Club of Buffalo, which was recently recognized as 2005 Club of the Year.
