NEWBERG, Ore. - Saint Mary's College STUNT narrowly fell in their first two games at the Pacific Northwest Open, falling to Northwest Nazarene University, 24-21, and falling to George Fox University, 23-22. The Belles fall to 4-9 on the season.
Saint Mary's vs Northwest Nazarene
The two teams battled back and forth in the first quarter. After Northwest Nazarene took three points in the first two rounds, Saint Mary's took two points in round four to cut the deficit to one heading into the first break. The Nighthawks took two points in round two after no points were awarded in round one. The two teams then split rounds three and four to head into halftime with the Nighthawks leading, 7-5 early.
Both teams earned points in every round of quarter three. After Northwest Nazarene took two points in round one, the teams split a point each in round two before Saint Mary's battled back to take two points each in rounds three and four to outscore the Nighthawks in the quarter, and the cut the deficit to one, 12-11, heading into the fourth quarter.
Northwest Nazarene came out strong in quarter four, winning the first three rounds, 4-3, 3-2, 4-2, to pull away. The Belles would take round four, 3-1, but it wasn't enough as the Nighthawks pulled out a close 24-21 victory.
Saint Mary's vs George Fox
George Fox got out to a quick start in the first quarter, taking an early 3-1 lead. The Bruins continued to hold strong in the second quarter, taking points in each round. The Bruins won three of the rounds while the Belles took the third round with routine three, going into halftime with George Fox leading, 8-4.
The Belles found their rhythm in the third quarter as they showed why they are one of the best Jumps and Tumbling teams in Division III. Saint Mary's outscored George Fox 7-3 in the quarter while winning all four rounds to tie the game at 11 a piece heading into the fourth quarter.
A high scoring first round saw the Bruins take a slight advantage, 5-4, to retake the lead. George Fox edged out Saint Mary's in round two, 3-2, to head into the second half of the fourth quarter with a 19-17 lead. Both teams earned two points each in round three to head into the final round with just two points separating the teams. Saint Mary's took the final round of the day, 3-2, but it wasn't enough as they barely fell to George Fox, 23-22, in the night cap.
