KISSIMMEE, Fla. - Saint Mary's College Softball fell in both of their opening games at The Spring Games on Sunday. They would fall 10-0 in five innings to Carlow University and fall to the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth in the night cap, 5-1. The Belles fall to 0-2 to open the season while the Celtics improve to 1-1 and the Corsairs improve to 3-1.
Saint Mary's vs Carlow
Carlow would get on the board early as they would score one run in both the first and second innings, scoring off a wild pitch in the first and a ground out in the second. The Celtics would then come out and extend their lead off of three RBI singles in the third inning which saw their lead grow to 6-0.
Carlow would then score four more runs in the fifth inning, coming off of five hits. The Celtics would use three more RBI singles to extend their lead to double-digits, 10-0.
Saint Mary's would look like they would have a comeback brewing in the bottom of the fifth with two runners on, but would end the game on an infield pop out.
Freshmen Hunter St. Peter (Traverse City, MI) and Katie Hans (Novi, MI) would record the two hits for the Belles while junior Sam Mikitka (Naperville, IL) would throw 4.1 innings, striking out six batters. Freshman Ashlyn Yeo (Jackson, MI) would also add 0.2 innings of work in her first collegiate appearance.
Saint Mary's vs UMass-Dartmouth
Dartmouth would come out quickly, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning off of an error and an RBI triple. Freshman Faith Dean (Monroe, MI) would then lock down the Corsairs through her next three innings of work, striking out two batters in those innings.
As the lights kicked on in Kissimmee, Dartmouth would see another kick out of their offense, scoring two more runs off of an error and fielders choice to double their lead. Saint Mary's would go to the bullpen as sophomore Sammy Schrader (Romeoville, IL) would make her first collegiate appearance in the sixth inning. However, Dartmouth would grow their lead thanks to an RBI single, heading into the final inning with a 5-0 lead.
The Belles would come out hot in the seventh with back to back hits, after a leadoff single from senior Alexis Rauch (Cassopolis, MI), sophomore Mary Charniak (Palos Hills, IL) would follow it up with a double down the left field line. After a fielders choice, freshman Talia Jorgensen (St. Paul, MN) would bring home the first run of the season for the Belles on a bunt single. But that would be all she wrote for Saint Mary's as a fielders choice and a fly out would end the ball game.
Rauch would go 2 for 3 on the night while five other Belles would record a hit. Dean would finish her night with five innings pitched and two strikeouts while Schrader would throw just one inning.
