LEESBURG, Fla. - Saint Mary's College Softball fell in both games on day two of The Spring Games. Saint Mary's would fall to Russell Sage College in the opening game, 4-1, and fall to North Park University in the nightcap, 9-0, in five innings. The Belles fall to 0-4 to start the season while the Gators improve to 2-0 and the Vikings improve to 3-1.
Saint Mary's vs Russell Sage
The Gators got out to a quick start, scoring two runs in the first inning off of an RBI single and an RBI groundout. The Gators would double their lead in the fourth inning, scoring two runs off an RBI triple and single.
The Belles would press for a late comeback in the fifth inning as freshman Hunter St. Peter (Traverse City, MI) would bring home junior Leah Zimmerman (Huntertown, IN) with an RBI single after Zimmerman tripled to lead off the inning. That would be all the offense for the Belles as they would go scoreless in the final two innings to fall to the Gators.
Errors would be the story for the Belles as they would commit four defensive errors in the game.
Freshman Talia Jorgensen (St. Paul, MN) would lead the Belles, going 2-4 on the game while St. Peter, Zimmerman, and freshman Lydia Hinga (Portage, MI) would record base hits. Junior Sam Mikitka (Naperville, IL) would throw her first complete game of the season in her second start, going seven innings and striking out five batters.
Saint Mary's vs North Park
It seemed like the Belles defense had found their groove to open the game with North Park, allowing just two runs in the first three innings off an RBI triple in the first and an RBI single in the third.
The Saint Mary's offense would not be able to keep up with North Park as freshman Gia Schiavone (Poland, OH) would single in the second inning, that being the only hit of the game for the Belles.
While the pitching and defense looked like it had found its rhythm, the vikings would come out and put up seven runs in the fourth inning to put the Belles out of the game and finish them off in the top of the fifth for a run-rule victory.
Freshman Faith Dean (Monroe, MI) would go 3.2 innings in her second start while sophomore Sammy Schrader (Romeoville, IL) would add 0.1 innings, her second appearance this season.
UP NEXT FOR THE BELLES
Saint Mary's returns to action tomorrow morning as they continue action at The Spring Games, taking on Westminster College at 9am and then taking on New England College at 11:15am.
