MELBOURNE, Fla. - Saint Mary's College Softball fell in both games to open their spring break play, falling to Lakeland University, 5-4, and to the University of Wisconsin-Superior, 11-1. The Belles fall to 2-6 on the season.

Saint Mary's vs Lakeland
Lakeland got the scoring going with two runs in both the first and second innings to take an early 4-0 lead. Saint Mary's cut the deficit in half in the top of the third, after sophomore
Talia Jorgensen (St. Paul, MN) doubled to left field, junior
Allie Moss (Goshen, IN) singled to the right side of the infield to bring her in to score. Sophomore
Gia Schiavone (Poland, OH) singled to advance Moss and freshman
Isabelle Hochmuth (St. Louis, MO) brought her home with a base hit to left.

Both teams were quiet in the fourth and fifth innings before the Muskies tacked on another run in the bottom of the sixth. Down to their last at bats, the Belles didn't go down quietly. After a leadoff single from sophomore
Arianna Vazquez (Carol Stream, IL), Jorgensen doubled to send pinch running junior
Adele Zurek (Middlebury, IN) to third. Moss then flew out to center field, allowing Zurek to score and Jorgensen to advance. Schiavone singles to bring Jorgensen home and was followed up with a Hochmuth single. Lakeland was able to shut down the final batter and close out the game, taking the win 5-4.

Jorgensen and Schiavone both went 3-4 on the day while Hochmuth tacked on two hits as well. Jorgensen tallied two doubles and came around to score twice. Moss added two RBIs and a run scored while Schiavone and Hochmuth tallied an RBI and Zurek scored as well.

Ashlyn Yeo (Jackson, MI) threw all six innings for the Belles. Allowing five runs while striking out two batters.

Saint Mary's vs Wisconsin-Superior
Superior started strong with three runs in the top of the first inning. Saint Mary's bounced back for a run of their own after back-to-back singles from Moss and freshman
Molly Ryan (Joliet, IL). Hochmuth then hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Moss.

The Belles shut down the Yellow Jackets offense in the second and third innings, but gave up two runs in the fourth and six in the fifth while the Belles offense stayed quiet. Superior ended the game via run rule after leading by ten runs after the fifth inning.

Six different Belles tallied hits in the game while Hochmuth tallied the lone RBI and Moss scored the lone run.

Sam Mikitka (Naperville, IL) started for the Belles, throwing four and third innings while striking out two batters. Junior
Sammy Schrader (Romeoville, IL) closed out the final two-thirds inning, allowing one hit.

Saint Mary's returns to action on Tuesday as they continue play at the USSSA Space Coast Complex. The Belles will take on Marietta College at 2:30pm before playing Emerson College at 7pm.
