Belles Stay Undefeated With Comeback Win

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - Saint Mary's College Volleyball defeated Benedictine University, 3-1, to stay undefeated to open the 2025 season. The Belles improve to 6-0 on the year while the Eagles fall to 4-5.

Saint Mary's got out to a hot start to open the game as they would take the first set, 25-14. The Belles would outkill the Eagles 16-7 in the set as junior Caroline Carens (Naperville, IL) would tally seven kills in the set alone. Four other Belles would add multiple kills in the set while sophomore Giuliana Graczyk (Chicago, IL) would add nine assists.

Benedictine would get the better of the Belles in the second set, taking it 25-14, to tie the match. The Eagles would tally two more kills than the Belles in the set, 11-9. Four Belles had four or more kills to end the set while Carens totalled nine.

The Belles would storm back in the third set, after trailing by as much as seven in the set, to take the lead back in the match with a 25-22 victory. Saint Mary's would close the match on an 8-1 run. Carens would move into double-figures with 13 kills while Graczyk moved to 16 assists and junior Abby Reese (Elkhart, IN) would bring her total to 12.

After Benedictine would once again go ahead early in the fourth set, the Belles would continue to battle. After trailing by six points throughout the set, Saint Mary's would storm back and close the game on another 8-1 run to take the fourth set, 26-24, and the match, 3-1.

Carens would lead the match with 16 kills while freshman Shannon Rudge (Granger, IN) would tally 10 of her own. Graczyk would finish the game with 23 assists while Reese would add 13. Four Belles would tally double-digit digs on the night, senior Karli Fegan would lead with 14 while Reese added 13 and Rudge and senior Delaney Martin (North Judson, IN) would add 11. Carens would also add a match high three blocks.

UP NEXT FOR THE BELLES

Saint Mary's continues the homestand on Friday as they host Manchester University for a 7pm matchup. The Belles then close out the homestand on Tuesday, September 16, as they host Franklin College at 7pm.
