Belles Fall to Thunder in Saturday Afternoon Battle

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - Saint Mary's College Lacrosse fell to Trine University on Saturday, 18-7, in MIAA action. The Belles fall to 5-7 (2-2 MIAA) on the year while the Thunder improve to 9-2 (4-0 MIAA).

Saint Mary's would get out to a hot start as freshman Annabelle Spruill (Brookhaven, GA) would find the back of the net from sophomore Lana Skibins (Granger, IN) less than a minute into the game. Trine would come back and score two goals to go into the first break with a 2-1 lead.

The Thunder would come out and score one more in the first five minutes of the second quarter before sophomore Cate Krema (Western Springs, IL) would cut the lead to one with just under nine minutes to play. Trine's offense would heat up after the Saint Mary's goal, scoring five more to go into halftime with an 8-2 lead.

Senior Valentina Rubio (Wayland, MI) would open the scoring in the third quarter, scoring just over a minute in. Trine would continue to dominate offensively, scoring four more goals. As the quarter winded down, Krema would score her second goal of the day off of an assist from sophomore Kathryn Kalinowski (Atlanta, GA).

The Thunder would add another to open the fourth quarter before the Belles would score back to back times, starting with sophomore Rachel Speckhard (Munster, IN) would find the back of the net from Rubio. Rubio would then get another goal of her own just over 60 seconds later. Trine would continue to add on, scoring four more unanswered. Speckhard would finish the scoring the Belles off an assist from Rubio before Trine would add another to finish off the scoring and secure their win, 18-7.

Krema, Speckhard, and Rubio would all add two goals on the day while Spruill added one of her own. Rubio would lead the team with two assists while Skibins and Kalinowski would each add one. Rubio and Krema would each record a team high three shots and three shots on goal. Rubio and freshman Piper Downey (Northbrook, IL) would each lead the team with four draw controls while Krema and sophomores Sophia Delgado (Indianapolis, IN) and Cate Shepherd (Bay Village, OH) would lead the team with three ground balls.

Senior goalkeeper Emma Zmudzinski (Granger, IN) would record eight saves on 26 shots faced.

UP NEXT FOR THE BELLES

Saint Mary's heads into their final three games of the regular season, starting with back-to-back road games at Kalamazoo College on April 16 and at Calvin College on April 19. The Belles conclude the regular season on Tuesday, April 22, as they host Hope College at 4pm.
