NOTRE DAME, Ind. - Saint Mary's College Soccer defeated the University of Olivet on Tuesday night, 5-1. The Belles improve to 7-3-2 (1-3 MIAA) while the Comets fall to 2-11 (0-4 MIAA).
Saint Mary's and Olivet celebrated the Belles annual Morgan's Message Game to raise awareness for student-athlete mental health.
Â
Saint Mary's dominated offensively in the first half, controlling possession for the majority of the first 45 minutes. The Belles outshot the Comets 12-0 in the first half while tallying nine corner kicks to Olivet's two. Out of the 12 shots, eight were on target.
Â
The Belles got on the board just seven minutes into the second half as senior
Grace Reyda (Penfield, NY) took a near sided corner and launched it towards the near post. The cross found the head of senior defender
Izzy Sherman (Fort Wayne, IN) who found the back of the net for her first collegiate goal.
Â
Saint Mary's continued to control the game offensively, extending their lead in the 63rd minute. Sophomore
Isabella Kreydich (Tinley Park, IL) controlled the ball in the middle of the field and bullied her way past a Comet defender before playing a beautiful through ball right past the Olivet defense. Freshman
Mia Johnson (Mission Viejo, CA) found the end of the pass and took a quick touch to the left, past the Olivet keeper, and slotted the ball in to extend the lead to 2-0.
Â
Just four minutes later, Johnson found herself back in the Olivet box. She fired a shot straight into the hands of the Comet keeper, but the force of the shot made the ball bounce right back to her as she slotted it into the right corner to secure her brace. Shortly after, freshman
Bella Musachio (Rochester Hills, MI) found the ball at her feet at the top of the box off a pass from Johnson. Dribbling to her left and fighting through contact, Musachio found the back of the net while being sent to the ground for her first collegiate goal.
Â
The scoring wouldn't stop there for Saint Mary's. After Musachio was brought down in the penalty box, junior defender
Brooke Baumann (Barlett, IL) slotted away her second penalty of the year to extend the lead to 5-0. The Comets would get on the board off a penalty kick in the 90th minute to close the gap, closing out the game at 5-1.
Â
Kreydich, Johnson, and Musachio all lead the game with five shots each while Redya tallied three and Sherman and sophomore
Danielle Escobedo (Yorba Linda, CA) each tallied two. Musachio led the team with four shots on goal while Reyda, Kreydich, and Johnson each had three. Escobedo also added two.
Â
Johnson tallied her fourth multi-goal game of the season while Baumann added to her total, Sherman and Musachio both tallied their first collegiate goals. Reyda, Kreydich, and Johnson tallied the three Belles assists.
Â
Sophomore goalkeeper
Keona Caraballo (Parma, OH) made one save on the lone shot from open play for the Comets. All 21 available players for the Belles made an appearance in the match. Saint Mary's outshot Olivet 26-2, 18-2 in shots on goal, while tallying 17 corner kicks to the Comets four.
