Escobedo and Barresi Score Two Late Goals to Lead Saint Mary's to Win Over Olivet

OLIVET, Mich. - Saint Mary's College Soccer were victorious over the University of Olivet on Wednesday afternoon, 2-0, in Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association play. The Belles improve to 7-4 (2-1 MIAA) while the Comets fall to 2-9-3 (0-4-1 MIAA)

Saint Mary's controlled the first half as they went into the break with a 15-1 shot advantage over Olivet. Senior Mary Kaczynski (South Bend, IN) and sophomore Margaret Slove (Spring Grove, IL) led the team with four shots each. The Belles also outshot the Comets 8-1 in shots on goal, Slove and freshman Taylor London (Orland Park, IL) each had two.

The Belles continued to dominate offensively but had trouble finding the back of the net in the second half. Until freshman Danielle Escobedo (Yorba Linda, CA) found the back of the net at the 83:39 mark to give Saint Mary's the lead from 20 yards out as it snuck over the Olivet goalkeepers hands for her first collegiate goal. Escobedo's goal was assisted on by fellow freshman Yulissa Gallegos (Goshen, IN) for her first collegiate assist. But the Belles wouldn't stop there, as senior Grace Barresi (St. Charles, IL) would tack onto the lead with a goal at the 87:32 mark to close out the match. Barresi's goal came from a free kick on the far side of the box into the upper right corner, the free kick was the result of an Olivet yellow card.

Saint Mary's would outshoot Olivet 31-4 and 17-2 in shots on goal. This is the sixth time the Belles have recorded more than 20 shots in a match and the second time they have recorded more than 30, the other coming against Knox.

Three Belles recorded five or more shots, Slove led the match with six while Kaczynski and Barresi both tallied five, London would tally four shots off the bench. Slove, Barresi, and London would all lead the team with three shots on goal while junior Izzy Sherman (Fort Wayne, IN) notched two. Senior goalkeeper Riley Lindsey (Valparaiso, IN) recorded two saves on the Comets two shots on goal, this was Lindsey's fourth win in goal this season and her third shutout of the season.
