ALBION, Mich. - The Saint Mary's volleyball team came up on the wrong side of a 3-0 (25-12, 25-13, 25-13) against Albion in conference competition on Tuesday night.
The two sides traded points back-and-forth early on in the first set as the score was tied eight times over the first 20 points of play. With the match knotted at 10-10, the host Brits used a momentum-shifting 14-1 run. A kill by
Megan Collantes kept the set alive for the Belles at 24-12, but a kill by the Brits closed out the 25-12 first-set decision.
The second set saw the teams tied at 5-5 before another run by the home side put Albion ahead 15-6 before the Brits extended their lead to 18-8.
Colleen McCarthy,
Claire Hennessy, and
Megan Collantes all put down kills before an Albion attack error made it a 20-12 score. The Albion advantage was too large to overtake late in the set, and the Brits closed out the stanza with a 5-1 spurt for a 25-13 win.
Albion took the first four points of the third set and never trailed. Saint Mary's kept battling and used a 5-1 scoring run of their own to make it 20-12 in the third frame.
Molly Pooler put away back-to-back kills before
Colleen McCarthy and
Claire Hennessy each added a kill. A service error by the Belles followed by a block by the Brits extended the Albion lead to ten points, and a kill and an ace ultimately closed the set and the match by the 25-13 margin.
The Belles (7-12, 2-4 MIAA) have a break from competition this weekend and return to their home court on Wednesday, October 27 to host Trine as the three members of the Class of 2022 will be recognized at the match.
