KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Saint Mary's soccer team came up on the short end of a 4-0 final against league-leading Kalamazoo on Saturday.
Belles held the Hornets at bay over the first 22 minutes of play as
Thallia Robles made a pair of saves and the defense cleared a shot off the line. Over that same span,
Lexi Trombly sent a shot just over the crossbar in the 11th minute and the Belles earned a corner kick in the 16th minute of action. The Hornets, however, capitalized on a corner kick in the 23rd minute with a goal, scored on a loose ball in the box in the 31st minute, and tallied a late strike in the 44th minute for a 3-0 lead at the half.
The Belles continued to battle by earning an early corner kick in the second half.
Megan Saunders had a shot go just wide in the 55th minute, and
Becca Stella made a goal-stopping defensive play in the 57th minute. Kalamazoo, however, added a fourth goal in the 68th minute for a 4-0 advantage. Saint Mary's nearly got on the scoresheet in the final minute of action, but
Rose Stackhouse's effort sailed high in the waning moments of the game in the 4-0 final.
The Belles (5-8-1, 0-4-1 MIAA) return home to host Adrian on Wednesday, October 23 at 7:00 p.m. The two seniors on the squad -
Kellen Hinchey and
Thallia Robles - will be recognized at their final home competition.
