KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Saint Mary's volleyball team picked up a 3-0, (26-24, 25-19, 25-14) win over Kalamazoo in conference play on Friday night.
After claiming an early 6-2 lead in the opening set, the Belles saw the host Hornets come back to tie the score at 7-7. The teams stayed within three points of one another throughout the remainder of the set, which featured 12 ties and six lead changes. With the score tied 22-22, the Hornets put down a kill and benefited from a ball handling error to pull ahead 24-22. The Belles, however, were far from finished in the set.
Meaghan Gibbons put down a kill, and
Alexis Grady served up an ace to tie the score at 24-24. Gibbons then took care of the final two points with two more kills to give the Belles the 26-24 comeback win.
Saint Mary's broke the second set wide open by turning a 3-3 tie into an 8-3 lead. That advantage quickly ballooned to 16-6 as the Belles kept the pedal to the medal with both solid offense and strong defense. The Hornets made things interesting late in the set with a 5-0 run to cut the deficit to 23-19, but the Belles were able to take the 2-0 overall lead in the match after a pair of attack errors gave Saint Mary's the 25-19 win.
Kalamazoo was the side to jump out to an early lead in the third set as the Hornets took a 7-3 advantage while looking to extend the match to a fourth set or beyond.
Leah Buck and Gibbons each sent down kills, and Grady tallied another service ace to put the Belles right back into the set at 7-6. Both sides continued to play scrappy defense while battling to get a decisive run. With the score tied at 11-11, it turned out to be the Belles who would get the big spurt of points for the difference in the set. Saint Mary's won nine of the next ten points to pull ahead 20-12. There were no late heroics for the Hornets in the third set as the Belles clinched the sweep with a 25-14 victory.
The Belles (13-10, 6-6 MIAA) have a short rest before taking on No. 10 Hope in Holland, Michigan as Saint Mary's and the Flying Dutch face off at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
