ALBION, Mich. - Saint Mary's College Volleyball fell to Albion College, 3-0, in their penultimate regular season game on Wednesday. The Belles fall to 15-10 (2-5 MIAA) while the Britons improve to 22-4 (5-2 MIAA).
Saint Mary's got out to an early five point lead in the first set before Albion was able to bounce back and knot the match at 10 a piece. The Britons would go on a strong 9-2 run to extend their lead over the Belles, getting ahead as much as seven in the set. While Saint Mary's battled back and knocked the deficit down to three, Albion battled back and took the first set, 25-19. Sophomore Kalli Lewkowski (Spring Lake, MI) led the team with six kills in the set while junior Abby Reese (Elkhart, IN) added seven assists.
Both teams played almost exactly equal throughout the second set, trading points back and forth with neither team garnering a lead larger than a couple points. As both teams found themselves knotted up at 20, the Belles went on a quick run to get to set point, leading 24-21. The Britons battled back, forcing the set past the 25 point threshold. While both teams continued to trade points, Albion came out on top 28-26. Lewkowski finished the set at eight kills while junior Caroline Carens (Naperville, IL) jumped to seven on the match.
Albion took their momentum from the end of the second set and rode it all the way through the end of the match. The Britons took the third and final set in dominant fashion, 25-15.
Lewkowski led the Belles with 10 kills on the night while hitting an impressive .409 on the match. Carens added nine kills of her own while adding a match high five blocks. Lewkowski added four blocks while Reese and senior Grace Braselton (Grand Rapids, MI) each had three. Reese and sophomore Giuliana Graczyk (Chicago, IL) both led the team with 14 assists while senior Karli Fegan (Orland Park, IL) led with 17 digs.
