FREELAND, Mich. - Saint Mary's freshman defender Sophia Fleming has been named the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Defensive Player of the Week for women's soccer contests played between September 2-8.
Fleming, a native of La Mesa, California, played a big role for the Belles on both ends of the pitch as Saint Mary's went 1-1 on the week. In a 2-1 setback against Anderson, she played all 90 minutes and was key to keeping the game tied for more than 80 minutes of play. On Saturday against IU-South Bend, Fleming registered her first goal of her collegiate career, which was also the game-winner for the Belles.
The MIAA Defensive Player of the Week honor is the first of her career.
