Strong Finish Secures Second Place for Belles

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. - Saving the best scores for last this fall, the Saint Mary's golf team used a 318 on the final day of the conference season to secure second place in the MIAA standings and earn the Belles hosting rights for an 18-hole AQ round in the spring.

Hope posted the low round of the day with a 311 as the Flying Dutch took the 2021 conference title. Kalamazoo posted a school record 316 to take second place at the round, and the Belles placed third with a 318 - their lowest conference score of the fall season. Kalamazoo's Darby Scott was the round medalist with a one-over par 73.

Sydney Hruskoci led the Belles with her second 77 in as many days as the senior tied for fifth overall in the round. Hruskoci posted 10 pars and two birdies all while shooting an even score on par four holes over her 18 holes of play. Katelyn Tokarz and Ashley Brewster each carded scores of 80 to tie for tenth place. Tokarz tallied two birdies and was one-over par on par five holes. Brewster, meanwhile, registered nine pars and was one-over on par three holes en route to her collegiate career-low score of 80.

Katherine Hopkins and Joanna James turned in matching scores of 81 to each hold a share of 14th place. Hopkins circled a birdie on her scorecard while notching eight pars and finishing one-over on par three holes. James led the team with three birdies on the day and was even on par three holes.

Haley Angel competed as an individual on the weekend and led all players competing in that individual format with an 83 to tie for 20th. Angel had eight pars and was even on par three holes in the round.

At the conclusion of the round, Sydney Hruskoci and Katelyn Tokarz were announced as having earned Second Team All-MIAA honors for the 2021 season based on scores this fall. It is the fourth All-MIAA honor for Hruskoci while the distinction is the first for Tokarz.

The Belles will be one of four teams to compete for the conference's automatic qualifier in the Spring 2022 season, joined by Hope, Calvin, and Adrian. The automatic berth to the NCAA Championships will be determined over 54 holes of play next semester as Saint Mary's will host one 18-hole round with conference champion Hope hosting two 18-hole rounds.
