Question & Answer With Coach Urquhart

Coach Jesse Urquhart instructs the soccer team during a match.

Throughout the Spring 2020 season, we will be sharing some question and answer sessions with our Athletic Department staff. We hope you enjoy getting to know more about us as we work to stay together from far apart.

Our first installment features head soccer coach Jesse Urquhart.

1. What is your go-to coffee order?

Hot Dark roast black.  Cold coffee isn't real coffee.

2. What hobbies do you enjoy outside of coaching?

I still love to play soccer, I still play some hockey, I enjoy cooking, and watching Philadelphia sports teams (Flyers, Phillies, Union, Eagles, Sixers)

3. What are the best experiences you've had professionally so far?

My first career win as a Head Coach was fun and I remember the score, the opponent, etc. But when I think about the best experiences, all I think about some of my experience with current & former players.  AJ's OT goal in the NCAA tourney, Selly's PK to extend the shootout in the conference final (and eventually win 6-5), Becca's diving header against Defiance, Rose's goal at Earlham, Kellen's first career goal, Jillian's wild goal celebrations.  It may sound cliché, but my best experiences are witnessing their success.  Although winning Shortest Pants in the Athletic Department at the 2018/19 Belles Awards is a very close 2nd.

4. Who is someone you find inspirational?

My inspiration in coaching is my former college coach, Kevin Sloan.  I had a rocky start to my college career and eventually I ended up playing for him, coaching with him, and the time was invaluable.  He was tough, constantly challenging me, and had high expectations.  Both as a player and a coach, he is without question one of the biggest influences in my life.  However, my parents are at the top of that list.  The love and support I continue to receive from them is second to none.  The older I get, the more thankful I become for my upbringing and all they've done for me and my siblings.  I hope to one day be an outstanding parents like Scot & Debbie and the top class coach Kevin was for my soccer players.

5. Why Saint Mary's?

My reasons for "Why Saint Mary's" have certainly evolved since I started in June 2016.  Today, I am committed to SMC for the student-athletes I have the privilege of coaching, the staff I am blessed to work with, and the plan our program has in place to continue to grow and develop.  I love to be challenged and SMC challenges me to be a better coach, mentor, person, and I get to do that surrounded and supported by a team of players I love and Athletic Staff that has become my family away from family who live in Southern New Jersey & Delaware.  Shout out to South Jersey!

6. Is a hot dog a sandwich? Please explain your answer.

Yes... if you slice the hot dog and eat it between two pieces of individually sliced pieces of bread.  Otherwise, no, not a sandwich.

7. What is your hype song?

Pretender - Foo Fighters

8. What are your favorite sports moments - either as a spectator or an athlete?

Some of my best moments were playing for Neumann University.  I still remember almost every game, every goal, the celebrations, the heartbreak, there's just so much.  I loved watching the Phillies win the 2008 World Series and the Eagles win the Superbowl in 2018, but they don't come close to my time at Neumann.  Nothing beats competing with the boys at NU, who became my best friends, or playing 2 years of college soccer with my brother.
